She completed her Ph.D. in Sociology at the New School for Social Research (New York, USA), and was a research fellow at Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversities (Germany) before joining CUHK and HKSYU.

Her work mainly focuses on the issues related to religious movements, migration and globalization, and urban gentrification (Ecology of Learning Project, Lily Foundation 2006-2007). One of her joint research projects was to inquire as to how culture and economics intertwined in urban re-structuring before and after the 1990 recession in New York City.
